Biomass is by definition, “plant matter and animal waste used especially as a source of fuel”.  It is biological material derived from living or recently living organisms, such as plant material, agricultural wastes, animal residues, industrial residues, sewage and municipal wastes.

Biofuel is fuel that is derived directly from living or recently living material. The word is used for solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels.

Bioenergy is renewable energy that is created by using biofuels. Scientists and engineers have invented various ways to extract and convert the energy from these biofuels and turn that energy into useful products like heat, mechanical power, and electricity.

Bio-refinery is an integrated bio-based industry, using a variety of different technologies to produce chemicals, biofuels, food and feed ingredients, biomaterials (including fibers) and power from biomass raw materials.
